Char Dham Yatra – Uttarakhand

1. Yamunotri

• Deity: Goddess Yamuna

• Location: Uttarkashi district

• Altitude: ~3,293 meters (10,804 ft)

• Significance: It is the source of the River Yamuna, one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism. Pilgrims visit the Yamunotri Temple and take a dip in the Surya Kund, a hot water spring believed to have healing properties.

2. Gangotri

• Deity: Goddess Ganga

• Location: Uttarkashi district

• Altitude: ~3,100 meters (10,200 ft)

• Significance: This is where the holy River Ganga is believed to have descended from heaven to earth. The Gangotri Temple, on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, is a major pilgrimage site.

3. Kedarnath

• Deity: Lord Shiva

• Location: Rudraprayag district

• Altitude: ~3,583 meters (11,755 ft)

• Significance: Home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the Kedarnath Temple is set against the stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Himalayas. It is believed that the Pandavas visited Kedarnath to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Mahabharata war.

4. Badrinath

• Deity: Lord Vishnu (Badrinarayan)

• Location: Chamoli district

• Altitude: ~3,300 meters (10,827 ft)

• Significance: The Badrinath Temple, located on the banks of the Alaknanda River, is dedicated to Vishnu and is part of both the Chota Char Dham and the original Char Dham circuit. It’s also one of the 108 Divya Desams.

Order of the Yatra:

Traditionally, the Chota Char Dham Yatra follows this order: Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath

This journey is not only spiritually significant but also offers mesmerizing views of the Himalayas, rivers, and serene landscapes.
